It keeps the sculptural silhouette you see from the front and the sides, but gives back the walking space behind it — which in most UK bathrooms is the difference between a freestanding bath fitting and not.
Meaningfully. A fully freestanding bath needs 400–600mm of clear floor on every side; a back-to-wall bath needs none behind it. In a 2.2m-wide room that recovered half-metre is often what makes the layout work. You still want proper clearance at the foot and the open side.
Wall-mounted taps are the natural fit, since there is finally a wall to fix to — and it keeps the floor clear. Deck-mounted is possible only if the bath has a rim built to take a tap, which most sculptural designs do not. A floorstanding filler still works if you prefer the look, positioned at the open end.
It should sit close, with the gap sealed, or you create a narrow trap for dust and water that is impossible to clean. Most back-to-wall baths are designed to finish flush against a tiled wall. Check the flat face is genuinely flat before ordering — some baths described as back-to-wall are simply less curved on one side.
