Allow 400–600mm of clear floor on every side you need to reach, and at least 1,100mm at the foot end. A 1700 x 750mm bath therefore wants roughly 2,100–2,300mm by 1,350–1,550mm of floor area once access is accounted for. The absolute minimum anywhere is about 150mm, but that is a cleaning gap rather than a walking one — it will feel tight the first time you try to mop behind it.
1700mm is the standard for a main bathroom and the size most UK rooms are built around. 1600mm is the sensible step down where length is tight without losing a full recline. Below that, 1350–1500mm is compact territory — still a proper soak if the bath is designed for it, but worth checking the internal length rather than the external, since a thick-walled bath loses more inside than you would expect.
A filled bath with someone in it commonly exceeds 300kg, and a stone-composite or resin bath can pass 350kg concentrated over a small footprint. Concrete floors are not a concern. Suspended timber floors usually are fine too, but in older properties, or where joist condition is unknown, it is worth having a builder look before ordering rather than after. This is the single most common reason a bath arrives and cannot be installed.
Freestanding suits a room with space to walk around the bath and the intention to make it the focal point. Back-to-wall gives most of the same silhouette while recovering the floor behind it, and takes a wall-mounted tap. Fitted is the most space-efficient but rarely reads as a centrepiece. The decision is usually made by the room rather than by preference.
